We don’t usually post rumors here, but this one is too special, and it could influence how we use our phones. Apple Inc.–the largest mobile phone maker in the world–is possibly pushing a new norm in the world of smartphones. That is, interestingly, a new way to listen to music.
Website Mac Rumors is reporting that Apple has filed a new trademark–based on evidences available–for a new music product designed for its line of devices. It is called ‘AirPods’, and the site suggests that it could be the company’s optional listening device for the next iPhone that does not include a headphone port.
The said trademark was filed by an unknown company Entertainment in Flight, LLC which, according to the report, has some connections with the Cupertino-based tech giant. One of which is the manager who goes by the name of Jonathan Brown. He was reportedly mentioned in other Apple documents and was involved in the company’s intellectual property issues. Apple has used such companies to hide many important patent filings, the article adds.
No Air in the Pods out of the box
Instead of shipping the AirPods with the iPhone 7, the site says that it will be more practical for Apple–because building wireless earbuds is costly–to just include a Lightning port earbuds for it, and sell the AirPods separately. Mac Rumors also added that Apple, reportedly, once planned to ship the new phone with the wireless earbuds, but it was later changed due to supply issues with the accessory.
Reports about the no phone jack iPhone 7 started to circulate online in 2015 and was later given another fuel by a Wall Street Journal article published in June of this year.
Although the iPhone 7 will share a lot in common with the iPhone 6 and 6S in terms of features, the Journal says the biggest change in it is the lack of headphone port, and the Lightning connector will serve as the double-port, to be used for charging the device, and for listening to music. The same report also claims that unlike the past no-S versions of the iPhone–like iPhone 5 and iPhone 6–changes in this year’s no-S device will be minimal and the reason is that Apple is saving them for the 10th anniversary of the phone product in 2017.
In addition to the report by the WSJ, leaks also have appeared on the web claiming to show the unannounced new phone that doesn’t have the port for music.
